這個秋天,羅漢堂很高興在其香港展廳迎接Barrère藝廊的特展。
1969年,Barrère藝廊成立於巴黎市中心——聖日爾曼德佩區,數十年來舉辦了許多不同展覽,以促進及保存遠東藝術為本,專門從事中國雕塑、考古、陶瓷、裝置藝術,以及日本雕塑和瓷器的收藏。此外,來自建陀羅古國、印度及東南亞的雕塑藝術品,也經常出現在藝廊中。
在半個世紀的經營下,藝廊經手過的古董今天均遍及世界各地著名的博物館內,Barrère也協助全球多個藏家建立重要私人收藏。
1993年,創始人Jacques Barrère發現了一件非常重要的、來自北京頤和園內銅亭的青銅花板。在Jacques Barrère的努力下,得到了國家博物館和北京文物局的支持,銅花板終被送回頤和園銅亭,今天可供大眾欣賞。
在今年秋天的這次展覽中,15件佛教雕塑與重要中國漆器傢俱于羅漢堂一同展出,觀眾得以同時感受兩種獨特風格的藝術品。
尤為特別的是,參觀者不是在寺廟莊嚴的氛圍,而是在真實生活的環境背景中,去感受這15件佛教雕塑作品及中國漆器傢俱的濃厚文化意義,於浮世中洗滌心靈。
這次展示的雕塑作品包含了世界的信仰和文化演變的例子。
譬如佛教如何從建陀羅古國中逐漸延伸,到達中國、日本等地區。觀眾可以看到如:平安時代早期8-9世紀日本菩薩高102釐米;安思遠舊藏的深刻直立圖騰;細心觀察兩個宋代或明初的阿南達和凱西亞帕的青銅雕像高73釐米,1904年在巴黎德魯奧售出,似平凡卻充滿了生命能量,帶著真實的微笑展現在我們的眼前,如它們在2秒後動起來,你也不會感到驚訝。作品展示了中國雕塑家的非凡功藝。
我們希望,於佛教雕塑和精美中國漆器傢俱的和諧並置中,讓觀眾看到藝術的橫向本質!

This autumn, Luohan Tang is happy to welcome in its showroom, Barrère Hong Kong. Established in 1969 in the heart of Paris, the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district, the Jacques Barrère Gallery has been organising exhibitions to promote and preserve Far-Eastern art. The gallery specialises in Chinese sculpture, archaeology, ceramics and the decorative arts, as well as Japanese sculpture and porcelain. Statuary art from Gandhara, India or South-East Asia is also regularly displayed in the gallery. Objects from the gallery can be found today in the most prominent museums and private collections worldwide.
In 1993, founder Jacques Barrère discovered very important bronze panels that had come from the Tong Ting 銅亭, the Bronze Pavilion of the Summer Palace in Beijing. As a result of Jacques Barrère’s efforts and with the support of national museums and the Beijing Relics Bureau, the panels were return to the Tong Ting, where they can be seen and appreciated today.
In this exhibition 15 pieces of Buddhist sculptures are shown side by side with the finest quality of lacquer furniture. It will allow the viewer to contemplate both forms as pure works of art. Benefiting from the spiritual aura spread by the Buddhist pieces, the visitor could perceive the intense cultural significance of the lacquer furniture. Whereas, far from the preserved atmosphere of a temple, contemplating religious sculptures in the context of a living environment may amplify, by contrast, their impact to his unprepared soul.
The pieces of sculpture displayed here will deliver examples of the smooth evolutions of faith and culture across the Buddhist Asian lands. They will illustrate how Buddhist visual expression literally unfold from Gandhara to Japan through China. The visitor will discover for example, an early Heian period 8-9th century Japanese bodhisattva 102 cm high, formerly in the collection of Robert Hatfield Ellsworth, standing straight as a totem, in an attitude of deep concentration. Animated with a life-like energy, a closely observed pair of bronze statues of Ananda and Kasyapa from the Song or early Ming dynasty 73cm high, sold at Drouot-Paris in 1904 will show the penetrating skill, Chinese sculptors could bring to their creation.
Let’s hope that in the light of this harmonious juxtaposition of Buddhist sculptures and fine Chinese furniture, the viewer catches a glimpse of the transversal essence of Art!
